England head coach Brendon McCullum has expressed cautious optimism that pace ace Jofra Archer could be fit for the second Test against New Zealand, while heaping praise on debutant Emilio Gay for a โsuper-impressiveโ performance in the series opener.
Speaking after the first Test, McCullum revealed that Archerโs recovery is progressing well, and he is โhopefulโ the speedster will be available for selection at the Basin Reserve. โJofraโs been working hard behind the scenes. Weโre taking it day by day, but Iโm hopeful heโll be in the mix for Wellington,โ McCullum said.
The head coach also reserved special words for Durham opener Emilio Gay, who made his Test debut in Christchurch. Gay had been described as โspinningโ in the lead-up to the matchโa term McCullum clarified as meaning the young batter was buzzing with nervous energy. โEmilio was spinning a bit before the game, but thatโs natural. He channeled that into a super-impressive display. To come in and show that composure on debut against a world-class attack speaks volumes,โ McCullum added.
Gayโs 73-ball 47 in the first innings and a gritty 33 in the second helped England set a competitive total, earning widespread acclaim from teammates and pundits alike. The 23-year-oldโs technique and temperament drew comparisons with some of Englandโs finest openers.
With the first Test ending in a tense draw, all eyes now turn to the second Test, where Archerโs potential inclusion would add significant firepower to Englandโs pace attack. McCullum, however, remained measured. โWe wonโt rush him. But if heโs ready, heโs ready. And thatโs exciting for us,โ he said.
