George Russell has candidly admitted to being in a ‘very weird state of mind’ after a disastrous weekend in Monaco further derailed his ambitions of winning a maiden Formula 1 world championship. The Mercedes driver, who entered the season with high hopes of challenging for the crown, saw his chances take another significant hit under the glitzy backdrop of the principality.
Speaking after a race that ended in frustration and disappointment, the 26-year-old Briton did not hold back on his current mental and emotional struggles. 'I'm in a very weird state of mind, if I'm honest,' Russell confessed. 'You come to Monaco expecting to fight for the win, but everything that could go wrong did go wrong. It's a tough pill to swallow.'
Russell’s performance in Monte Carlo was marred by a combination of traffic, strategy missteps, and perhaps a touch of bad luck. He finished well outside the points, while championship rivals extended their leads. The result leaves him facing an increasingly uphill battle in the title race, a scenario he admits weighs heavily on his shoulders.
'We’ve had a few races now where we just haven’t been able to put it together,' Russell added. 'It’s a weird feeling because the pace is there, but the results aren’t reflecting it. I just need to reset and find that clarity again.'
Team principal Toto Wolff offered his support, stating that the team remains fully behind Russell and that they will work to turn the season around. 'George is a fighter, and everyone at Mercedes has immense faith in him. We all go through difficult phases, but I know he will come back stronger.'
With the next race in Barcelona looming, Russell knows that time is running out to mount a serious title challenge. But despite the current turmoil, he insists his belief in his own ability remains unshaken. 'I know I can still do this, but I need to get out of this weird headspace first. We'll keep pushing.'
