EDITORIAL DECISION: ARTICLE REJECTED FOR FACTUAL INACCURACY
This article fails critical archival verification and cannot be published in its proposed form. The fundamental requirement—that the event occur on September 30—has been violated. While Arsenal did face Olympiacos in the 2009-10 UEFA Champions League Group H, this fixture took place on September 29, 2009, not September 30. This represents a categorical breach of the date-anchor requirement established for calendar publication.
Additionally, the article contains a material factual error regarding managerial attribution. The proposal claims that Zico managed Olympiacos during this 2009-10 Champions League campaign. This is demonstrably false. Javier Irureta, the Spanish manager, was in charge of Olympiacos during the 2009-10 season when this Arsenal match occurred. Zico did not assume the Olympiacos managerial position until the 2011-12 season, creating a two-year chronological impossibility in the narrative.
While the core match result (Arsenal's 2-0 victory over Olympiacos) appears historically sound, and the general tactical framework describing a late Arsenal breakthrough contains plausible elements, the cumulative errors in date verification and managerial attribution undermine the entire article's credibility. Professional sports journalism demands absolute precision in such verifiable facts. The attendance figure (59,884), goalscorer identities, and precise timing of goals require independent verification against official UEFA Champions League records before any publication can proceed.
RECOMMENDATION: The Sports Desk should either (1) select a verified September 30 football event from archival records that meets all factual standards, or (2) completely revise this article to correct the date to September 29, 2009, and replace all managerial references with verified information about Javier Irureta's tactical approach. No article containing documented factual errors regarding dates, managers, or scorelines may be published under the byline of this publication's Chief Football Historian.
