Authorities in Turkey have arrested the president of the country's referees' governing body as part of a sweeping corruption investigation that threatens to undermine the integrity of the nation's football system. Ferhat Gundogdu, who leads the Turkish refereeing body, was detained alongside his vice-president and five additional individuals as police launched coordinated searches across homes, workplaces, and offices. Turkish justice minister Akin Gurlek confirmed the operation centers on serious allegations of systemic manipulation within the sport's officiating apparatus.
The investigation specifically targets what authorities describe as interference in critical aspects of referee management, including the formation of referee classifications, match assignments, scoring decisions, and appointment processes, as well as rule examinations. Justice minister Gurlek outlined the scope of the inquiry, emphasizing that authorities are pursuing accountability at the highest levels of the refereeing establishment. "We will resolutely continue our fight for clean football so that allegations damaging trust in Turkish football are brought to light, those responsible are held accountable before the law, and football is associated with the effort, competition and sportsmanship on the pitch," Gurlek stated, signaling the government's commitment to restoring confidence in the sport.
The timing of this investigation comes roughly a year after Turkish football experienced a parallel crisis in November 2025, when the Turkish Football Federation suspended 149 referees and assistant referees following an investigation that uncovered hundreds of professional match officials operating betting accounts. That sprawling scandal resulted in 29 arrests, including 14 footballers implicated in what appeared to be widespread misconduct across the sport. However, Gurlek did not establish any direct connection between last year's betting scandal and the current corruption inquiry, suggesting these may represent separate systemic failures within Turkish football.
The detention of Gundogdu and other senior figures represents an escalation in efforts to purge corruption from Turkish football's administrative ranks. With both betting scandals and now allegations of manipulation in official decision-making processes coming to light, the sport faces mounting pressure to demonstrate genuine reform and restore public faith in the integrity of matches and competitions.
