The takeover of Northampton Town has reached completion with the backing of Sports Alpha Capital (SAC), a consortium that counts former AC Milan, Chelsea and Brazil international Alexandre Pato among its investors. The deal received formal approval from both the Independent Football Regulator (IFR) and English Football League (EFL) earlier this month, marking a significant turning point for the League Two club. SAC will assume a 70% shareholding in Northampton Town Ventures Limited (NTVL), the entity that holds the majority of shares in the club, while existing owners David Bower, Nigel Le Quesne and Kelvin Thomas will collectively maintain a 30% stake in the organization.
The financial implications of this acquisition position Northampton favorably moving forward. The club will emerge from the takeover debt-free, following announcements of a pre-tax loss of just under £3 million in April 2026. SAC's founding partners, Joao Xavier and Tim Chamberlain, articulated their vision in a joint statement, emphasizing both ambition and responsibility. "We have ambitious plans for Northampton Town, but ambition must go hand in hand with sustainability and an understanding of what the club means to the people of Northampton and Northamptonshire," the pair stated. They committed to strengthening relationships with the Community Trust, supporters, staff, and local stakeholders, framing their involvement as a long-term commitment rather than a short-term investment.
Pato, who retired from professional football last year, is widely recognized for his distinguished career at AC Milan, where he scored 63 goals in 150 matches during a five-and-a-half-year tenure and claimed a Serie A title in 2010-11. The 37-year-old and his fellow investors, alongside Gemcorp Capital—a London-based independent investment management firm—attended Northampton's 1-0 victory over Newport County on September 5th. Xavier and Chamberlain indicated that comprehensive details of their strategic vision for the club would be unveiled in due course. This acquisition represents a pivotal moment for Northampton as they navigate recovery following their relegation to the fourth tier last season, having finished bottom of the League One table.
Northampton's rebuild is already underway under manager Chris Hogg, appointed in May, with the club bringing in 13 players during the summer transfer window, including striker Matty Warhurst from Manchester City.
