Over 4,000 miles from his native Dundee, Kurt Herd is carving out a unique place in international football. The 34-year-old has become the sole Scottish manager currently in charge of a men's national team, taking the helm of Dominica, a Caribbean island nation. When asked about this distinction, Herd's response was characteristically modest: "I'll be calling my mum and dad with that one," he laughs. After a brief interim period, he was appointed permanently in August to lead the Dominica national side, a role distinctly different from those held by Steve Clarke or his successor, Sebastien Pocognoli, back in Scotland.
What sets Herd's position apart is the sheer scope of his responsibilities. As Dominica's sole full-time staff member, he functions not merely as a manager but as analyst, scout, nutritionist, and yoga instructor all rolled into one. The demanding nature of the appointment has not deterred him, however. "A real whirlwind the last few weeks, but it's been amazing for me as a coach to go and test myself," Herd tells BBC Scotland. "It's been the toughest but the greatest three or four weeks of my career so far." His task is formidable: improving the world's 182nd-ranked side, comprised largely of amateur players drawn from an island population of approximately 65,000. Most squad members compete in Dominica's domestic league, which Herd equates roughly to Scotland's League 2. Though Concacaf rules currently limit the nation to six overseas-based players, a January rule change will permit recruitment of players with Dominican grandparents, opening new avenues for squad enhancement.
The recruitment strategy Herd has developed reflects his resourcefulness and determination. He spends hours scrolling through Instagram, searching player profiles for subtle clues—a flag emoji indicating Dominican heritage can be the key to identifying talent. Beyond social media reconnaissance, he has assembled a network of talent-spotters across the US, Canada, Europe, and the UK whose role is to identify, contact, and report back on potential recruits. Former St Mirren and Livingston goalkeeper Shamal George, now at Bromley, represents one such discovery. Yet recruitment forms only part of Herd's comprehensive approach. The squad now participates in yoga and mindfulness sessions, while he continuously reinforces guidance on diet and sleep patterns. He personally ensures he runs every morning and maintains a professional demeanor—notably abstaining from alcohol at night—to establish standards within his adopted community. "It's tough, to be honest - it's relentless," Herd admits. "I'm doing everything at the minute. I'm the full-time member of staff, so it all falls on my shoulders."
Herd's path to Dominica began long before his recent appointment. The former Dundee United academy coach has worked in Sweden, Australia, Malaysia, and Kyrgyzstan, accumulating experiences that have shaped his philosophy. He graduated from Abertay University and moved to Australia without a job secured, eventually coaching Magic FC. His journey has taken him to Kuala Lumpur, where he worked with Villareal's Asian operations, and to the mountains of Kyrgyzstan, where training sessions were once delayed four hours due to goats blocking the road. Along the way, he has encountered football's biggest figures—he played five-a-side against former Portugal striker Nuno Gomes at a FIFA event in Paraguay and was famously placed on a team with Arsene Wenger in Zurich, only to watch the legendary manager retreat indoors when light drizzle arrived, settling instead with a glass of red wine. Now, with Dominica competing in the Concacaf Nations League B this autumn, Herd's ambition remains clear: to drive meaningful change on a daily basis and eventually progress into elite club football. "I want that pressure," he states. "I want that day-to-day grind."
