Fulham head coach Alvaro Arbeloa has dismissed mounting questions surrounding his managerial future, stating that the primary focus must remain on the team as they search for their first Premier League victory of the season. The 43-year-old Spaniard finds himself under intense scrutiny heading into Saturday's 15:00 BST home encounter against Hull City at Craven Cottage. The Cottagers are currently rooted to the bottom of the table with only two points from four defeats and two draws in their opening six league fixtures, with reports indicating that another loss could potentially cost the head coach his job.
Despite the growing pressure, Arbeloa insisted it had "been a normal week" on the training pitch and deflected attention away from his personal status. "It is not about me, it is about the club, the players and the supporters," Arbeloa explained, emphasizing that the squad is fighting to reward the fanbase with a win. Fulham have suffered painful late setbacks in recent weeks; a second-half goal from Ryan Sessegnon had them 1-0 up and within sight of three points at Portman Road before Ipswich Town struck twice late on. That disappointment followed a dramatic match against Manchester United before the international break, where a deflected last-gasp strike from Matheus Cunha prevented victory, adding to an earlier 0-0 draw at Anfield against Liverpool.
Arbeloa arrived in West London in July on a three-year contract to replace Marco Silva, serving as somewhat of a left-field appointment by director of football operations Tony Khan following a brief interim spell with Real Madrid after Xabi Alonso's dismissal. The former Liverpool full-back was backed by glowing endorsements from Madrid president Florentino Perez and returning coach Jose Mourinho, but his start in English management has been challenging. Internal doubts have emerged just six matches into the campaign, with Arbeloa's methods failing to fully resonate with the squad and his handling of specific players causing surprise among the playing group.
Although Fulham have progressed to the last 16 of the Carabao Cup—where they are scheduled to host Crystal Palace this month—Arbeloa's immediate fate rests on league results. The manager insisted his players are fully committed and focused on the upcoming match, stressing the necessity of maintaining their intensity across a complete 90 minutes. Securing a positive result against Hull is crucial to withstand internal scrutiny before Fulham travel to take on Championship winners Coventry City next weekend in their third consecutive match against a newly promoted side.
