Swansea City head coach Vitor Matos has called on his players to convert the disappointment of their home defeat against West Ham United into motivational energy for the Championship promotion battle. The Swans saw their four-game winning streak halted at the Swansea.com Stadium following Divine Mukasa's first-half strike, which condemned the hosts to only their second league loss in 11 matches this season. Despite the setback, Swansea remain at the summit of the Championship table.
The high-stakes encounter remained tight until Mukasa found the net, after which the game opened up as the hosts pushed for an equaliser. Swansea's most threatening moments came from set-pieces through defender Ben Cabango, who struck the crossbar before dragging another clear chance wide of the target when seemingly poised to score. At the other end, Swansea goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux was called into action during the second period, making a pair of saves to deny Jarrod Bowen as well as stopping an attempt from Pablo.
West Ham climbed to second position in the division with the victory, becoming the first visiting club to claim a league win at Swansea since Southampton achieved the feat in April. Furthermore, it marks just the fourth loss in 21 home Championship fixtures for Swansea under Matos's tenure, with West Ham and Southampton remaining the only two teams to conquer them across 11 league outings this term.
Rather than letting the loss derail their strong start, Matos is adamant that the performance proved Swansea can hold their own against the division's leading contenders. "That frustration, that's something that should stay, but that's something that more than anything should give us the fuel to push ourselves in training, push our standards and keep improving," Matos said. Looking ahead, the head coach insisted: "What I saw today, I think we can compete against every team and that's what we need to do. We need to keep pushing ourselves to beat the best teams of the league."
