Rangers squandered their opportunity to reclaim the Scottish Premiership summit after a costly Dan Neil error led to a 2-2 draw against Dundee at Dens Park. Entering the Saturday-night clash full of confidence on the back of a seven-match winning streak, the Ibrox side appeared on course for an eighth consecutive victory before letting the advantage slip. Manager Derek McInnes described the decisive defensive mistake as feeling "like a balloon popping," leaving his side frustrated in their quest to return to the top of the table.
The visitors were punished for a disjointed opening period when Dundee took the lead through Bradley Fink. Badredine Bouanani managed to pull Rangers level shortly before the interval, and McInnes' men emerged with heightened intensity after the break. Nicolas Raskin subsequently slammed home a long-range stunner to put Rangers ahead during a dominant 25-minute spell. However, that control evaporated when Neil's mishit backpass to goalkeeper Ivor Pandur was intercepted by Callum Jones, who pounced to secure a point for Dundee.
Speaking to BBC Scotland, McInnes conceded that while Dundee were good value in the first half, his team "can't come away from home and have to score three goals to win a game." Former Rangers midfielder and title winner Derek Ferguson warned on BBC Sportsound that brief periods of quality will not suffice, arguing that playing well for 20 to 25 minutes will not win leagues and that such sensational form must be sustained for around 70 minutes to capture championship silverware.
The stalemate also laid bare recurring finishing issues for Rangers, who matched their match xG of nearly two but underperformed across the wider campaign. Having scored only 13 league goals from an accumulated expected goals total of just under 20โa shortfall of nearly seven goalsโMcInnes stressed to Sky Sports that his players must become more clinical with challenging fixtures ahead. The missed opportunity at Dens Park now opens the door for Celtic to stretch their lead at the top of the Premiership to four points if they defeat Hearts on Sunday.
