Liverpool starlet Rio Ngumoha delivered an exceptional display at Anfield, picking up Player of the Match honors in a dramatic 4-3 comeback victory over Villarreal. The teenager provided two assists in the Champions League encounter, leading talkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy to suggest that established England right-winger Bukayo Saka should be wary of the rising talent.
Ngumoha etched his name into the club's record books during the European clash. By setting up Ronald Araujo with a floating cross and later teeing up Alexis Mac Allister, the attacker became Liverpool's youngest-ever player to score or assist in the Champions League at 18 years and 52 days old. He also joined Barcelona's Lamine Yamal as the only two teenagers to register two assists in a single match in the competition this term, while standing as the third-youngest Englishman to provide an assist after Jude Bellingham, Lewis Miley, and Theo Walcott over his seven tournament appearances.
Assessing the display on The Sports Bar, Cundy argued that Ngumoha plays without fear of failure and could eventually challenge Saka for England's starting spot on the right wing ahead of Euro 2028. While noting that Saka has 59 caps, remains the starter in England's best lineup, and has dealt with numerous injuries, Cundy emphasized that the Liverpool winger is catching the eye. Ngumoha previously featured in England's pre-World Cup training camp and debuted in a 1-0 friendly win over New Zealand, though manager Thomas Tuchel left him out of the final 26-man tournament squad.
The performance marks another milestone for Ngumoha, who has started every Champions League match under Andoni Iraola as Liverpool secured their third European win of the season amid talk of a potential new deal. Speaking to Amazon Prime after the match, Ngumoha called the night "up there with one of the best I've played" and expressed his fearless mindset to take on defenders one-v-one, adding that hearing the Anfield crowd chant his name was "a dream."
