Crawley Town have dismissed head coach Colin Kazim-Richards after Tuesday night's 3-2 home loss against Shrewsbury Town left the club five points adrift at the bottom of League Two. The former Turkey international, whose 18-year playing career preceded this first managerial role, departs alongside assistant coach Julian Gray and director of football Erdem Konyar. The decision was confirmed shortly after midnight following mounting calls from supporters, with the Red Devils having suffered seven defeats in 10 league outings in what represents their worst start since entering the English Football League in 2011.
The dismissal ends a tenure that began positively in March, when Kazim-Richards steered Crawley to fourth-tier survival courtesy of two wins and three draws across their final seven matches. That run allowed the side to finish just one place and one point clear of the relegation zone, following a turbulent period in which the club won the League Two play-offs in 2024 before suffering relegation back to the division a year later. Kazim-Richards was subsequently handed a new contract in May, with the club acknowledging the vital role he and Gray played in retaining their EFL status.
However, an extensive summer turnover yielded poor results, with 16 players arriving either on loan or permanent deals while 16 exited. Crawley have won just once in the league all season and conceded 20 goals in 10 matches, with Kazim-Richards handing out nine senior league debuts. Speaking to BBC Radio Surrey following the defeat to Shrewsbury, Kazim-Richards stated that he took responsibility and felt he could turn results around if given time, adding: "I think we need a little bit more experience, a little bit in terms of game management and things like that. But we'll see what happens, right?"
Looking ahead, owner Raphael Khalili faces a pivotal recruitment decision with the club in a desperate position at the foot of the table. BBC Radio Surrey and Sussex sports editor Robin Grey noted that the exit of Konyar highlights recognition from Khalili that summer recruitment was inadequate, indicating the club must now look towards a manager with established league experience. In an official statement, Crawley Town thanked Kazim-Richards, Gray, and Konyar for their hard work and dedication, extending their best wishes to all three for the future.
