Former Georgia national team captain and Dundee midfielder Giorgi Nemsadze has died at the age of 54 after suffering a heart attack. The news was confirmed on Facebook "with a heavy heart" by Dinamo Tbilisi, the club where the prominent midfielder both began and concluded his professional playing days.
Over the course of his international career, Nemsadze made 69 appearances for his country. At club level, his path included stints with Hamburg, Trabzonspor, Grasshoppers, Reggiana, and Locomotive Tbilisi before he signed with Dundee in 2000. He spent three years playing in Scotland, arriving during a high-profile era under manager Ivano Bonetti that also featured the acquisition of Argentina striker Claudio Caniggia. Nemsadze's impact at the Scottish Premiership side was formally recognised in 2010 when he was inducted into Dundee's hall of fame.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze led the tributes to the former skipper, praising his enduring impact on the nation's footballing heritage. "I express my deep sorrow over the death of Giorgi Nemsadze. This is a tremendous loss for Georgian football," Kobakhidze stated. "As the former captain of Georgia's national team, an outstanding professional and a leader with a fighting spirit, he successfully represented both the national team and Georgian and foreign clubs. With his distinctive playing style and perseverance, he left a lasting mark on the history of Georgian sport."
After hanging up his boots, Nemsadze transitioned into club leadership and management, serving for a year as Dinamo's sporting director. He subsequently moved into coaching roles, working with the country's youth players and taking charge of Shevardeni Tbilisi, Dila Gori, and Dinamo.
