Paris Saint-Germain's Ligue 1 encounter against table-toppers Lyon has been postponed by 24 hours after French police prohibited the match from being played on its initial date. The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) confirmed the decision in a statement on Friday, moving the Parc des Princes fixture from Sunday at 19:45 GMT to Monday at 20:30 as the French capital braces for another weekend of demonstrations.
Authorities are currently organising a major security response for marches scheduled on Saturday, following prior unrest where roughly 550,000 citizens mobilized across Paris and other major cities. Those demonstrationsโdriven by student organisations and labour unions protesting against education standards, the cost of living, and elevated fuel costsโfollowed weeks of student rallies and saw instances of destruction, violence, and looting. Police availability on Sunday is under added pressure due to an NFL fixture at the Stade de France between the New Orleans Saints and the Pittsburgh Steelers in Saint-Denis, situated around 10 kilometres from where the protests are due to start at Place de la Bastille.
The security situation has had a wider impact across the French football programme, with Toulouse's top-flight home fixture against Troyes also rescheduled from Saturday to Sunday following an official request from authorities. The delay to the Paris clash holds critical sporting stakes at the summit of Ligue 1, where Lyon lead the standings on 14 points after seven games, holding the top spot on goal difference over second-placed PSG, who are the reigning European and French champions.
The new Monday timeslot also means the encounter between France's top two clubs will directly coincide with the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London. Two injured Paris Saint-Germain players feature among the nominees for the prestigious prize: Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and 2025 winner Ousmane Dembele.
