Tottenham Hotspur manager Martin Ho has urged football authorities to provide Women's Super League referees with increased backing and training following a contentious 2-1 north London derby defeat to Arsenal. The decisive moment at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium arrived in the 56th minute when Gunners forward Alessia Russo scored from the penalty spot, completing a comeback victory for the visitors and leaving Ho deeply aggrieved by the officiating.
The penalty was awarded by referee Phoebe Cross after Lisa Baum's effort struck the post and Cathinka Tandberg's subsequent clearance hit the outstretched hand of Tottenham team-mate Ella Morris from roughly one yard away. Under the laws of the game, an indirect free-kick should be awarded if the ball strikes a player's hand directly from a team-mate's touch. Ho insisted that managers were briefed ahead of the campaign that proximity and reaction time would prevent such actions from being penalised, expressing frustration that on-pitch officials could not explain the call during the match.
While acknowledging that referees have a demanding role, Ho argued that standard levels in the WSL have declined compared to last season. The competition currently operates without goalline technology or video assistant referees (VAR), and not all match officials work on a full-time basis, with reports indicating a full professional transition may not occur until 2029 despite fresh funding. Ho highlighted that elite official Lisa Benn was stationed on the touchline rather than taking charge in the middle of a high-profile fixture, while also pointing out inconsistency after Spurs received two first-half bookings while unpenalised Arsenal players pulled shirts.
Despite the derby setback, Tottenham retain a one-point cushion over their rivals in the WSL standings. With WSL Football contacted for a response regarding the incident, Ho maintained that more full-time appointments and comprehensive training are essential across the league to stop major matches from being settled by calls that fall outside the sport's established rules.
