Severe conditions brought by Storm Boelo have forced the abandonment of Aintree's opening horse racing fixture of the season, located just four miles away from Anfield where Liverpool are scheduled to host Brighton & Hove Albion. A yellow weather warning is active across Merseyside until 11pm on Sunday, but despite the disruption to racing in the city, football action across both the men's and women's teams has been cleared to proceed as planned.
Liverpool confirmed that their Premier League meeting against Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield will go ahead at 2pm GMT, with Andoni Iraola's fifth-placed side ready for action. The women's team will also play at 2pm GMT against London City Lionesses at the St Helens Stadium in the Barclays Women's Super League. Due to the severe winds, the club advised supporters attending either venue to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and heed the instructions of stadium stewards stationed to assist them.
Just a short distance away, an 8am track inspection at Aintree resulted in the cancellation of a planned seven-race jump card, which was due to stage the Grade 2 William Hill Old Roan Chase as part of a Halloween Family Fun Day. Course officials recorded peak winds of 44.97mph and an average velocity around 40mph, which knocked down wings and rails. Clerk of the course Sulekha Varma stated that participant and spectator safety could not be guaranteed, adding that no weather improvements were anticipated before 3pm and discussions regarding rescheduling would take place shortly.
While conditions halted racing on Merseyside, other venues handled the weather more successfully as cards at Galway, Wexford, and Market Rasen were cleared. Market Rasen passed its 7.30am check with gusts reaching 37mph and an average wind speed of 14mph, leaving it as the only British race meeting going ahead on Sunday, with clerk Alice Cosgrove confirming the track remains under continuous observation.
