Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka and forward Breel Embolo have both been cleared to return to international duty next month after an investigation into forged Covid-19 vaccination certificates. The Swiss Football Association (SFV) confirmed on Tuesday that manager Murat Yakin will be able to select the duo for November's upcoming fixtures against Slovenia and Scotland.
Xhaka, a 34-year-old Sunderland midfielder who holds Switzerland's national appearance record with 152 caps, was absent for October's Nations League clashes against Scotland, North Macedonia, and Slovenia. His exclusion followed an admission that he had obtained a counterfeit certificate enabling him to travel and play in 2022. Striker Embolo, 29, was similarly dropped from the national squad in September over the same issue.
Both players have received fines of 150,000 Swiss francs (ยฃ136,000), which carry a two-year suspension on the condition that no further infractions take place. Xhaka took responsibility for his conduct and has retained the captain's armband, though the SFV stated that the ultimate choice regarding the captaincy stays with Yakin. National team director Pierluigi Tami addressed the resolution, explaining: "We considered this from various perspectives. The specific circumstances of both cases, the concluded legal proceedings, and the sporting consequences already implemented all factored into the decision. We are convinced that a return to the national team in November is responsible and the right thing to do."
Yakin is set to officially announce his squad selection on 5 November ahead of the decisive international window. Switzerland currently sit at the top of Group E as they prepare to conclude their Nations League campaign with matches against Slovenia on 13 November and Scotland on 16 November.
