Scottish fifth-tier outfit Johnstone Burgh have been left facing an extraordinary scheduling dilemma after being required to contest two separate cup ties on the same day, with kick-offs separated by a mere 30 minutes. On Saturday, 21 November, the club must provide a team to visit Tayport in the Scottish Communities Cup third round at 14:30 GMT, while another squad must travel 65 miles away to meet Dunipace in the Lowland League Cup first round at 15:00 GMT.
The bizarre situation developed after neither opponent, nor other sides scheduled across alternative weekends, proved willing to move away from Saturday afternoon kick-offs. In a statement published on X, Burgh detailed how they had "explored every possible option" to find an answer within an already full calendar. Their extensive efforts included attempting to rearrange league fixtures and South Challenge Cup ties, offering to visit Tayport for a midweek clash, suggesting playing on Friday night or Sunday afternoon, and proposing to contest the Communities Cup match immediately before or after the Lowland League Cup fixture. Burgh even offered to surrender their share of gate receipts to offset any inconvenience caused by rescheduling.
Burgh lifted the Scottish Communities Cup two seasons ago when the tournament was known as the Scottish Junior Cup, and they currently sit eighth in the new Lowland League West following promotion from the West of Scotland League Premier Division. Backed by their strongest team, they would have entered both ties as favourites. Instead, they must divide their forces against Dunipace, who are second bottom of the new Lowland League East, and Tayport, who sit sixth in the Midlands Premier League in the tier below. All three clubs have previously had matches postponed due to runs to the Scottish Cup second round; Tayport ultimately fell to Stranraer, Dunipace were thrashed by Largs Thistle on Saturday, and Burghโs home encounter against Highland League outfit Formartine United was postponed and moved to this Saturday.
Addressing the outcome, the club stated they are "extremely disappointed" that no reasonable compromise could be reached to allow their strongest group of players to take part in both cup ties. Burgh extended their thanks to Tayport and the other clubs for reviewing the proposals, noting they understand the collective desire to stick with traditional Saturday afternoon fixtures, while reassuring supporters that every possible avenue had been explored to secure a workable solution.
