Wales captain and Tottenham Hotspur defender Ben Davies has taken his footballing expertise into the boardroom after joining the Football Association of Wales (FAW) Council. The 33-year-old was one of eight new appointments to the council in August 2026, stepping into a role as a dedicated representative for Welsh players. At a recent gathering inside Dragon Park in Newport, Davies sat alongside governing executives to help shape the nation's footballing future, seeking to connect the realities of the pitch with administrative strategy.
His introduction coincides with structural modernization within the FAW, which has broadened its decision-making room to feature women and people from previously underrepresented ethnic backgrounds alongside experienced, long-serving officials. Davies, a Europa League winner and Champions League runner-up with Spurs, explained that his motivation is rooted in stewardship. Describing playing for Wales as an "absolute honour and privilege," Davies stated that he wants to use his stature to maintain high standards and ensure opportunities flourish throughout the Welsh pyramid, from grassroots competitions to the professional tier.
Davies made an immediate impression during the morning meetings, earning commendation from FAW president Mike Jones. Jones noted that the defender actively spoke up during the session, expressing that he expects "big things" from Davies going forward. Capped 104 times since his international debut at age 19, Davies is one of only four players in Welsh history to surpass 100 caps. He also brings a distinctive skillset to the table, possessing a degree in Business Management, an earned Uefa A Licence in coaching, and past experience representing Welsh cultural interests at Downing Street.
Although Davies stressed that retirement is hopefully still years away because he feels fit and loves playing, he is eager to use this council role as a valuable learning experience for his post-playing career. Rather than focusing solely on a conventional coaching path, Davies revealed he is open to charting a front-office trajectory. By eventually crossing the divide from active player to boardroom executive, he aims to bring a rare and vital competitor's perspective to future governance decisions.
