Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has issued a blunt reality check to 16-year-old attacker Max Dowman, insisting that "we are not in Disneyland" following the youngster's red card during Tuesday's Carabao Cup exit against Fleetwood Town. Dowman was sent off in the 85th minute of the penalty shoot-out defeat after reacting to a heavy challenge from Harrison Neal, resulting in a three-match suspension. A visibly frustrated Arteta spoke to the teenager on the touchline as he exited the pitch, later confirming he had specifically cautioned him before the match about handling provocation.
Addressing the situation on Friday for the first time, Arteta explained that his visible annoyance was rooted in the high expectations required at senior level and the pre-match instructions given to Dowman. "I haven't seen the reaction to my reaction, whether it is positive or negative. But you need to understand the context and the relationship that I have with him and what we discussed just before we went out," Arteta said, comparing his direct approach to the discipline he experienced from his own parents. The manager noted that he held a follow-up discussion with Dowman on Thursday, confirming there were "no issues at all" between them while reiterating the need to be "very straight" about expected standards.
The incident represents Dowman's second recent dismissal, having also received a red card after facing heavy challenges while representing England Under-19s against the United States earlier this month. Arsenal lodged an appeal against Tuesday's sending off, but the decision was upheld by the Football Association (FA). Arteta expressed that he was "very disappointed" with the governing body's ruling, adding that the Gunners were "lucky today that he (Dowman) hasn't had a broken foot" following Neal's tackle.
Looking ahead, Arteta stressed that Dowman must cope with competitive realities and earn his minutes just like any senior member of the squad. Explaining that he gets angry "big time" when Arsenal do not win, Arteta maintained that shielding the 16-year-old will not come at the expense of team standards. "This is the environment and this is the reality, otherwise we are in Disneyland. We are not in Disneyland, we are in the Premier League and this level," Arteta stated, concluding that while the club looks after him, they will demand the same accountability required of everyone else to ensure total fairness.
