Chelsea secured a home victory over a 10-man Manchester United side at Stamford Bridge following a decisive second half powered by goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer. After an evenly contested opening period, Chelsea's record £117m signing Rogers broke the deadlock in the 50th minute before United centre-back Lisandro Martinez was sent off, condemning the visitors to another desperate outing.
Rogers, who registered his sixth goal for the club since arriving from Aston Villa, had endured an anonymous start leading the attack as a number nine. The breakthrough arrived when midfielder Romeo Lavia won the ball to spark the move, allowing Rogers to charge directly at the opposition defence and loft a sublime dink over goalkeeper Senne Lammens. United's fortunes worsened when Martinez was shown a red card for a reckless challenge that conceded a penalty to Wesley Fofana, which Palmer converted despite an otherwise quiet display.
Earlier in the contest, United had threatened through Amad Diallo, who tested Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders from distance and at the near post. Captain Bruno Fernandes also squandered a major opening when set up by Bryan Mbeumo, seeing his volley denied by a fantastic block from young defender Josh Acheampong. At the other end, Estevao Willian caused continuous problems for United's defence, delivering dangerous shots and having two finishes ruled out for offside, while a chaotic showing from Fofana saw him strike the woodwork with a header deflected by Moises Caicedo.
Following Martinez's dismissal, United were forced into damage limitation as earlier positive work from Carlos Baleba and Andrey Santos unravelled. Chelsea comfortably managed the closing stages of the fixture, introducing substitutes Pep Chavarria, Malo Gusto, Valentin Barco, Danny Welbeck, and Geovany Quenda to see out the win and complete a satisfying afternoon in west London.
