Home / News / Wales Face Uphill Battle to Retain Top Young Female Talent Amid Growing England Interest

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) is locked in an "increasingly aggressive" battle to keep hold of its top young female talent, following the high-profile departure of Manchester United prospect Layla Drury to England. The 17-year-old Wrexham-born forward, who became United Women's youngest-ever scorer at 16 years and 220 days against Burnley and has made eight first-team appearances, switched international allegiances earlier this year after previously representing Wales at under-17 level.

Drury's choice highlights the substantial allure of the Lionesses, who have won two consecutive Women's Euros, reached the 2023 Women's World Cup final, and offer valuable commercial opportunities. With no elite women's clubs based in Wales, players routinely sign with English sides at 15 or 16, putting them directly on England's radar. Former Wales captain Kath Morgan, who earned 51 caps and now coaches at Coleg y Cymoedd, stated: "I don't think it's a decision based on finances - I think it's more based on the chance to have success in their careers." Calling for greater domestic funding, Morgan added: "The crux of it is that if there's a lack of infrastructure and investment, players will inevitably go to where that is offered."

To stem the outflow, the FAW has operated a Fifa-status development programme since 2020 for players aged 11 to 16, involving 31 talents playing in the boys' National Academi and 50 within Adran Premier academies. Senior boss Rhian Wilkinson has already handed opportunities to academy graduates Mayzee Davies of Manchester City, alongside Manchester United pair Scarlett Hill and Mared Griffiths. While Drury's competitive Wales youth outing permanently seals her switch under Fifa rules, the door remains open for Chelsea's 18-year-old midfielder Vera Jonesโ€”currently on loan at Watfordโ€”who featured for England's youth sides without playing for Wales first, leaving potential for a future switch akin to Hannah Cain and Lois Joel.

With a two-legged December play-off final against Norway looming as Wales seek a first Women's World Cup berth, FAW chief football officer David Adams stressed that Welsh bosses "must make every effort to protect our assets and retain our top talent." Going forward, the governing body is desperate to stop further departures, with Adams concluding: "Our hope is that young female players who were born in Wales feel a sense of belonging to represent Cymru."
