Former Sheffield United and Doncaster Rovers striker Billy Sharp has come out of retirement to sign for Northern Premier League side AFC Rushden & Diamonds. The 40-year-old forward had announced the end of his playing career only last month, but he has now stepped back onto the pitch for his former club following the suspension of Diamonds midfielder James Clifton.
His return coincides with a landmark occasion, as AFC Rushden & Diamonds are set to compete in the first round proper of the FA Cup for the very first time in their history. Should Sharp take part in the upcoming contest against Burton Albion, the fixture will officially represent the 814th professional appearance of his career.
The move marks a return to familiar territory for Sharp, who initially played for the club back in 2005 on loan from boyhood team Sheffield United, scoring nine goals in 16 matches. He established a notable legacy at Sheffield United by recording 129 goals in 377 appearances, and he went on to register 290 more senior-level goals before initially retiring at the conclusion of his Doncaster Rovers contract this summer.
Sharp was heavily involved on the pitch last season, participating in 45 games across all competitions for Doncaster Rovers while finding the net on 14 occasions. With his signing completed, the club will now look ahead to this weekend's FA Cup action as they make the trip to play the Brewers on Saturday at 15:00 GMT.
