A 14-year-old boy has turned himself in to law enforcement after a viral video captured him taunting Sunderland supporters with an image of the late Bradley Lowery. The incident took place during Coventry City's 3-1 Premier League victory against Sunderland on Saturday at the Coventry Building Society Arena, where the teenager was filmed in the stands holding up and pointing to a photo of Lowery on his mobile phone directed toward the visiting away section.
Following widespread circulation of the video on social media, Coventry City confirmed they were liaising with authorities, stating that the club does not tolerate offensive behaviour. West Midlands Police subsequently announced that a comprehensive investigation had been launched and that the 14-year-old had handed himself into custody. The police force noted they understand the community outrage and the distress caused to the family, confirming they are in direct contact with both football clubs and Lowery's relatives as the inquiry progresses.
Bradley Lowery, an avid Sunderland supporter and club mascot who formed a deep bond with former Black Cats forward Jermain Defoe, tragically died in 2017 at six years old following a battle with stage 4 neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive childhood cancer. In August 2017, his mother Gemma established The Bradley Lowery Foundation, which originally raised ยฃ1.3 million toward his treatment in the United States and continues to provide funding for childhood cancer research and medical equipment not covered by the NHS.
Responding to the footage on the foundation's social media channels, Gemma Lowery expressed immense heartbreak over seeing a cherished photo of her smiling son mocked, yet appealed to the public not to target the teenager with threats or hostility. Pointing out that the 14-year-old is the same age Bradley would be today, she insisted that hate must not be met with hate. She expressed hope that the boy's family, the police, and Coventry City will ensure he understands the devastating consequences of his conduct and learns an enduring lesson from the incident.
