A Hampshire Premier League Division One match between Andover Town and Paulsgrove was abandoned on Saturday after the visitors were reduced to just six players while trailing 8-0, prompting Andover manager Robbie Skeates to describe the contest as "a complete farce." The match was halted early in the second half in accordance with the laws of football, which dictate that a game cannot continue if either team has fewer than seven players remaining on the field.
Andover Town had already surged into a commanding 7-0 lead by half-time, scoring seven times in the first half before unusual events transpired during the interval. According to Skeates, all 11 Paulsgrove players walked off the pitch without issue at the break, but only seven returned to resume the match. Andover subsequently scored early in the second period to make it 8-0, after which another Paulsgrove player departed with an injury, forcing the referee to abandon the game.
Reacting to the incident on Andover Town's website, Skeates said he had never witnessed anything similar in all his years in football, noting that "four must have managed to get injured in the changing room." Paulsgrove, however, defended the withdrawals through posts on X, stating that the players sustained genuine injuries, with one reply to Skeates stating: "Sadly can't make injured player [sic] continue". A request by BBC Sport for Paulsgrove FC's contact details was declined by the league, while Skeates confirmed Andover Town would be submitting a report.
The Hampshire Premier Football League has formally launched an inquiry into the match. A spokesperson for the competition confirmed that an investigation is under way, noting that no comments can be made until the process finishes. The abandonment leaves Paulsgrove rooted to the bottom of the 16-team division in the 12th tier of the English football pyramid, having lost all 10 of their matches this seasonโincluding three completed games where they were defeated by eight goals or moreโwhile Andover Town remain in mid-table.
