Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane has declared that he would willingly trade his recently acquired Ballon d'Or for a Champions League winner's medal. The 33-year-old goalscorer, speaking at a media briefing ahead of Bayern's upcoming European encounter against Atletico Madrid in the Spanish capital, stressed that collective silverware remains his ultimate motivation in the sport. While describing his personal triumph as one of the greatest highlights of his career, Kane noted that lifting the prestigious European Cup alongside his Bayern team-mates would produce an even more incredible feeling.
Kane received the prestigious individual honour at a ceremony in London, finishing ahead of Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona's Lamine Yamal. In doing so, he became the first English player to claim the award since 2001โjoining a select historical group featuring Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan, and Michael Owenโand Bayern's first recipient since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981. The accolade followed a campaign in which Kane netted 73 goals across club and international fixtures to help Bayern secure a domestic treble, earning him pre-match tributes ahead of Saturday's Der Klassiker clash with Borussia Dortmund.
Alongside his pursuit of European honours, Kane revealed that he is "extremely close" to committing his future to Bayern through a fresh contract. The England captain, who arrived from Tottenham for ยฃ86.4m (100m euros) in August 2023, stated that the primary aspects of the agreement have been settled. With legal representatives working to finalise the smaller details following further positive discussions, the forward expects the contract to be concluded within days rather than weeks.
Kane's comments arrive during what he described as an emotional rollercoaster for the German club, which has had to navigate the sudden absence of head coach Vincent Kompany. The Belgian collapsed during a reserve-team training session on 23 October and spent five days in hospital before being discharged to continue his recovery, leaving assistant Aaron Danks to direct first-team responsibilities. While acknowledging that the squad misses Kompany, Kane insisted that overcoming recent extremes has brought the players closer together as they look to prove themselves on the pitch.
