St James' Park erupted in boos at the final whistle as Newcastle United slumped to a damaging 1-0 Premier League defeat against Everton, marking their second loss to the Toffees in less than a week following their Carabao Cup elimination. Matthias Jaissle's side endured a miserable evening headlined by an error from goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek, who let a routine shot squirm under his body for Thierno Barry to tap in the decisive goal, while substitute Jacob Ramsey was later sent off. The result lifted Everton up to seventh and consigned Newcastle to their fourth defeat in six league matches, leaving them in the bottom half of the table with only 11 points from nine fixtures.
Acknowledging the frustration voiced by the home support, Jaissle accepted responsibility for the display while lamenting a clear absence of conviction. The 38-year-old German tactician maintained that Barry's winner should have been ruled out for a foul on Fabian Schar in the build-up, but conceded that his squad is caught in a negative spiral and lacked bravery on the ball. Newcastle captain Dan Burn also admitted that nervousness had crept into the ground, remarking that while the team fared adequately between the penalty boxes, they were not ruthless enough when attacking or defending their own area.
The underlying statistics highlight severe issues for Jaissle, who is just three months into a four-year contract after replacing Eddie Howe following the former manager's five-year reign. Newcastle produced only two shots on target from 17 attempts against Everton and have now scored just one goal from their last 47 shots across all competitions. Furthermore, the Magpies have failed to keep a clean sheet in 14 consecutive home league games—the longest run in the club's league history—and no top-flight team has lost more home fixtures in 2026 than Newcastle's seven. Pundit Jamie Carragher voiced fears on Sky Sports over the club's transition following the summer exits of Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno Guimaraes, describing their home performances as flat and boring.
Jaissle insisted that togetherness and unity remain the only path forward as Newcastle attempt to stop their slump and rebuild fragile squad confidence. The Magpies now face a swift turnaround before the November international break as they head away to play Fulham on Saturday. A demanding sequence of fixtures awaits on the other side of the hiatus, with Newcastle scheduled to host Arsenal before traveling to face Brighton, placing immediate pressure on the German manager to find answers.
