A 14-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and subsequently bailed after social media footage captured a Coventry City supporter taunting Sunderland fans with an image of Bradley Lowery. The teenager handed himself in to West Midlands Police, who confirmed they have launched an investigation into the incident that took place during Saturday's Premier League match.
Bradley, a dedicated Sunderland supporter, captured the hearts of the football world before passing away at the age of six in 2017 following a diagnosis of a rare childhood cancer. The viral footage prompted an emotional response from his mother, Gemma Lowery, who expressed her heartbreak on Instagram: "So much of Bradley's short life was spent battling cancer and enduring treatments no child should ever face. To see such a beautiful memory used in such a cruel way really does make my heart hurt."
Issuing an update through the Bradley Lowery Foundation, a charity that raises funds and awareness to support children diagnosed with cancer, she affirmed that her "beautiful boy deserves to be remembered with love, not hate." Lowery also highlighted that she did not wish to see hatred targeted at the teenager involved, urging instead that he learn from his actions.
Coventry City have also confirmed they are examining the footage from the game. A spokesperson for the Sky Blues stated: "Coventry City FC is aware of footage circulating on social media in connection with an incident during our Premier League fixture against Sunderland. The club does not tolerate offensive behaviour and will liaise with the relevant authorities to determine the appropriate course of action." West Midlands Police acknowledged the distress the clip has generated and verified that Bradley's family is being kept updated as the investigation progresses.
