Former Rangers player Kyle Hutton is scheduled to stand trial in 2028 following accusations that he caused the death of a 40-year-old woman in a road collision. The 35-year-old denies all charges against him, which stem from an incident that led to the death of Victoria Cairns in South Lanarkshire in November 2024.
Prosecutors state that Hutton was "unfit to drive through alcohol or drugs" when his vehicle struck Cairns on Farmeloan Road in Rutherglen on 2 November 2024. Hutton is accused of travelling at excessive speed for the conditions and failing to make "proper observations" to see Cairns standing on the road. The collision caused Cairns to fall to the ground, leaving her so severely injured that she died in hospital four days later.
The former footballer faces a charge of causing death by dangerous driving, alongside an alternative allegation that Cairns's death resulted from careless driving. Hutton is also charged with failing to co-operate with breath and drug tests, as well as refusing to supply two breath specimens to assess his "ability to drive."
During a hearing at the High Court in Glasgow, defence solicitor advocate Graeme Brown KC entered pleas of not guilty on Hutton's behalf. Brown noted that jurors may be shown potentially upsetting footage during the trial and indicated that Hutton's wife is likely to appear as a defence witness. Lord Scott scheduled the four-day trial to begin on 7 February 2028. Hutton, whose playing career included a spell with the Ibrox club between 2010 and 2015 as well as stints at St Mirren, Dumbarton, and Partick Thistle, remains on bail.
