Having suffered six defeats in their opening nine fixtures with just a single victory to their name, concerns have emerged that an eight-game Europa League campaign—which features a Bonfire Night test against Dinamo Zagreb and a trip to AC Milan in December—is proving to be an unwelcome distraction from domestic duties.
Despite sitting two points adrift of safety, Le Bris' job is not in immediate danger, with the club hierarchy prepared to grant the former Lorient boss time to reverse the slide. The Frenchman, who took over in July 2024 and is Sunderland's longest-serving manager since Steve Bruce, still retains goodwill after masterminding promotion and recently guiding the squad into a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie against Crystal Palace. However, the underlying metrics remain alarming. Sunderland have failed to score a first-half goal in seven of their nine league matches, and three of their seven total league goals arrived in a single 5-3 defeat at Manchester City.
