Home / News / Burnley Financial Accounts: Everton Settlement Averts Record Loss Amid Ongoing Championship Crisis
📅 Published: November 04, 2026 at 17:52 ✍️ Published by: Sporty Picks Editor Reporting via SportyAI Editorial

Burnley averted what would have been a record-shattering deficit in their 2025-26 financial accounts courtesy of a £38.8m compensation settlement from Everton. Even after generating an all-time peak revenue of £144.5m, the Clarets recorded an overall loss of £9m for the campaign, improving on deficits between £24m and £29m posted across the previous three seasons. However, without the landmark compensation payout from the Toffees—stemming from a 2021-22 profit and sustainability breach that compromised Burnley's top-flight survival bid—the club's loss would have hit a historic £47.8m.

The financial picture represents a dramatic evolution from six years ago, when Burnley operated completely debt free with £41.65m in the bank during a fifth successive Premier League term. ALK Capital completed a leveraged buyout of the club in December 2020 by utilising £37m of Burnley's own cash, loans secured against assets including Turf Moor, and borrowing through holding company Velocity Capital. While overall club borrowings once peaked at £142.3m—the 10th-highest external debt in English football—the latest filings revealed that Velocity Capital has now repaid £77.7m of an £80.1m sum owed to the Clarets. Consequently, total debt dropped to £62.9m, with bank borrowing falling from £105m to £70.1m and debt factoring reducing from £37m to £16.1m.

Despite these improvements, the club's financial stability remains fragile because Everton's payout is subject to an appeal due to be heard in January. Burnley's board acknowledged that potential appeal rulings range from zero to requiring the full sum to be repaid, noting that the unresolved verdict could continue to cast significant doubt over the club as a going concern. University of Liverpool football finance professor Kieran Maguire pointed out that Burnley were still effectively losing more than £1m per week despite Premier League revenues, highlighting that underlying issues endure as the Clarets transition into the Championship backed by £48m in parachute payments and around £38m in player sales.

The club's economic challenges are compounded by a dismal start on the pitch, where Burnley currently sit inside the Championship relegation zone, four points adrift of safety with just one victory from their opening 14 matches. New Swiss manager Fabio Celestini remains winless after two games, while the Clarets have established a new English league record for the longest winless run at home. That Turf Moor drought will hit 400 days when rivals Blackburn visit on 22 November, leaving the squad under mounting pressure to prevent a double relegation straight down to League One.
