Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono has spoken publicly for the first time since the devastating death of Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel, describing the aftermath of the tragedy as the most challenging period of his life. De Miguel passed away on Tuesday morning following a horrifying on-pitch collision between the two players during a La Liga 2 fixture on Monday.
The incident occurred as both men competed for a bouncing ball, with the onrushing Owono clattering directly into the 30-year-old Spanish striker's head and chest. De Miguel appeared to lose consciousness on the pitch, prompting frantic gestures from players urging medical staff to intervene. He was quickly moved to an ambulance, where he reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest en route to the hospital before tragically losing his life. Owono received a red card following the incident, and the match was ultimately abandoned.
Spanish police have since launched an investigation into potential involuntary manslaughter regarding Owono's role, although the shot-stopper is not expected to face criminal consequences. In an emotional message published by his club, Owono expressed his heartbreak: "These are the most difficult days of my life. I am struggling to find the words, and it is very hard for me to process anything that has happened. I feel immense pain over the loss of Jesus. I am thinking of him, his family, and all the people who loved him. I know there will be many matters to address, and I will face whatever comes with complete respect. But right now, honestly, I cannot think of anything other than Jesus and the grief we are experiencing. Rest in peace, Jesus."
Following the tragedy, Andorra teammate Lautaro Spatz defended the keeper in a statement on Wednesday, offering tributes to De Miguel while addressing the profound toll on Owono. Spatz stressed that Owono is deeply affected and suffering, affirming that anyone who knows the goalkeeper understands "he would never intentionally hurt anyone." He reflected that while unfortunate accidents can occur in football, no one could have envisioned a collision leading to such catastrophic and heartbreaking consequences.
