Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has assigned veteran defender Seamus Coleman to a unique "hybrid role" for the squad's upcoming Nations League encounters against Austria and Kosovo. The 38-year-old, who has earned 81 international caps, remains without a club after departing Everton during the summer and has not featured in a match since June. Rather than making the competitive 24-man playing list, Coleman will take part in team training sessions while serving in a leadership and supportive capacity alongside the coaching staff.
Hallgrimsson acknowledged that it was "tempting" to formally select Coleman to play, pointing out that the defender's history of delivering strong performances for Ireland despite sparse playing time at Everton provided reason to believe in his national team capabilities. Although Coleman has mentioned in recent weeks that he is weighing up retirement, the manager revealed the player has expressed an eagerness to "start playing again." Hallgrimsson noted that this collaborative position is intended to help push the defender back toward competitive action, adding that they will have to "wait and see" how the situation evolves.
The latest squad update also marks the return of captain Nathan Collins, who is back in contention after a calf injury kept him out of Ireland's first four League B3 matches. In goal, Everton's Mark Travers has been brought in to replace injured shot-stopper Gavin Bazanu, who had opted out of the previous selection in September after stating it "would be wrong to participate" in matches against Israel. Elsewhere, Harvey Vale returns following a previous absence, while Hibernian's Owen Elding drops to the under-21 group. Hallgrimsson remains without Evan Ferguson (ankle), Josh Cullen (knee), and Jaden Umah (thigh), who are all sidelined by injury.
The Republic of Ireland will conclude their Nations League schedule by traveling to Linz to take on Austria before hosting Kosovo at Dublin's Aviva Stadium. Hallgrimsson's side currently sit third in League B3, having managed a single victory across their previous four fixtures as they prepare for the decisive upcoming window.
