Preston North End have completed the signing of midfielder Greg Docherty on a deal running until the end of the season. The 30-year-old arrives at Deepdale having been without a club since his departure from Charlton Athletic in September following the closure of the summer transfer window.
Docherty began his senior career with Hamilton Academical before securing a move to Rangers in 2018. Two years later, he joined Hull City, where he went on to make over 100 appearances and won promotion from League One. He subsequently repeated that promotion achievement after signing for Charlton Athletic, where he was also appointed club captain. Docherty made a single appearance for Charlton this season, which came in a 5-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup.
Prior to finalising the move, Docherty spent the past couple of weeks training alongside Graham Alexander's squad and featured for North End's Under-21 side. The midfielder expressed his excitement about joining the team, noting his familiarity with Deepdale. "I've always loved the idea of playing for Preston North End and I love Deepdale as a stadium too," Docherty said. "I found it extremely tough playing here as an opposition player, so I'm glad to be on the other side now."
Docherty also highlighted his discussions with Alexander regarding the team's ambitions: "I've had a really good feeling when speaking to the manager and when I see how passionate he is about turning this situation around, it gives me so much excitement to try and help change it too." Alexander welcomed the addition, adding: "We're really pleased to bring Greg in. He's been a captain, won promotions and knows the game inside out. Greg's vocal, fit and motivated, which are all the key things you look for in a professional footballer."
