Roberto De Zerbi Defends Match Officials Despite Controversial Jayden Bogle Incident in Spurs Defeat at Leeds

Tottenham Hotspur saw their bid for a fourth consecutive Premier League victory ended at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon as Leeds United secured a 1-0 win, handing Spurs their first top-flight defeat since September. Okafor made the difference to earn Leeds their first victory since September, but much of the post-match attention centered on referee John Brooks' decision not to dismiss Jayden Bogle during the opening half. With the match still goalless and Spurs arguably on top, Bogle caught Mathys Tel on the ankle with his studs, leaving the Frenchman with a bruising injury to his left foot that forced him off the pitch.

The encounter shifted following a lengthy video assistant referee check that lasted more than four minutes at Stockley Park. VAR Tony Harrington reviewed replays without Brooks ever visiting the pitchside monitor, ultimately confirming the on-field call of no red card after judging that Bogle was stepping into the tackle with a lack of speed in what was considered a reckless challenge. Because VAR cannot advise an on-field yellow card, Bogle went unpunished. The outcome was questioned by former Premier League assistant referee Darren McCann, who told BBC Sport that Bogle was lucky to remain on the pitch for a challenge that met the criteria for serious foul play, while former Spurs midfielder Michael Brown noted on BBC Radio 5 Live that the verdict would generate debate, especially after Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta was dismissed for a tackle on Micky van de Ven the previous week.

Despite the contentious non-dismissal, Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi adopted an unexpectedly peaceful stance toward the officials. Speaking after the match, the Italian stated he maintains full confidence in the referee and VAR, noting that nothing would have changed had Brooks looked at the monitor. Frustrations did boil over early in the second half when both defender Pedro Porro and De Zerbi received simultaneous yellow cards following a challenge by the Spaniard, a caution De Zerbi described as surprising and incredible following the first-half events.

Rather than using refereeing decisions as an excuse, De Zerbi accepted full accountability for Tottenham missing the chance to claim four league wins in a row for the first time since October 2023. De Zerbi admitted his side deserved to lose after being outrun, outworked, and outplayed following the break, remarking that they lacked the physicality and character of a top team. Emphasizing that the setback serves as a learning experience on their journey, the manager insisted Tottenham must keep their eyes firmly on where they can improve their own performances going forward.
