Tottenham Hotspur saw their recent momentum grind to a halt at Elland Road as Roberto De Zerbi’s side suffered a frustrating 1-0 defeat against Leeds United. Spurs entered the 12:30pm contest on the back of three consecutive Premier League victories—rebounding from a poor start to the campaign with an impressive run that included a memorable win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. However, the visitors were outmuscled by a physical Leeds outfit, with substitute Noah Okafor coming off the bench to net the winning goal and bring Tottenham's winning streak to an end.
The toothless display in attack provoked scathing criticism from former Spurs player Jamie O'Hara on the GameDay Phone-In, who singled out forwards Omar Marmoush and Dominic Solanke. Marmoush arrived from Manchester City in the summer on an initial loan arrangement that is set to turn permanent for £50million alongside £10m in add-ons. Substituted after 65 minutes for Dejan Kulusevski, the Egypt international has managed just one goal across all competitions this season in eight league starts for De Zerbi and still has not scored in an away Premier League match since moving to City from Eintracht Frankfurt in January 2025. Solanke offered little after being brought on from the bench, leading O'Hara to blast the duo, labelling Solanke 'non-existent' and Marmoush 'fraud levels' and 'absolutely garbage', while warning that teammates like Mohammed Kudus are now hesitating to put crosses into dangerous areas because the strikers cannot finish.
De Zerbi was equally candid regarding his team's shortcomings, openly venting his fury at their failure to match Leeds in physical duels. The Tottenham head coach lamented that his squad did not win their one-on-ones, wasted good spaces by making incorrect decisions, and lacked courage, personality, and character. Though De Zerbi noted that his squad worked diligently throughout the week and were fully aware of the intensity they would face at Elland Road, he acknowledged that Spurs may not yet be prepared to deliver regular consistency, stressing that honest evaluation of their second-half showing is vital if they hope to become a top team.
Tottenham were also left aggrieved by refereeing decisions overseen by match official John Brooks. De Zerbi was critical of Brooks' standards, expressing frustration that Jayden Bogle was not sent off for stepping on Mathys Tel's Achilles, especially after Pedro Porro was handed a yellow card in a similar area during the second half. Following the contentious officiating in the wake of the defeat, Tottenham are set to submit an official complaint to ProRef regarding the decision.
