Sunderland moved off the bottom of the table by claiming a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Chelsea at the Stadium of Light, marking their second league win of the season and their first triumph since August. Midfielder Enzo Le Fee provided the decisive moment from the penalty spot in the 36th minute after Brian Brobbey was brought down inside the box by Chelsea defender Levi Colwill.
Brobbey delivered a commanding performance leading the line, consistently troubling Colwill in aerial battles and nearly executing a solo goal after earlier meeting a 15th-minute cross from Chemsdine Talbi. His persistence culminated in the decisive penalty incident, which also saw Colwill booked before being substituted at the break. Le Fee made no mistake with the spot-kick, sending Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders the wrong way. The breakthrough came despite an early setback for the hosts, who lost captain Granit Xhaka to an injury inside the opening three minutes, prompting Jules Ahoka to step into midfield.
Chelsea pushed for a response but were repeatedly frustrated. Cole Palmer seemed poised to win a penalty following a sharp first touch and direct run into the box, but VAR confirmed that contact from defender Luke O'Nien occurred just outside the penalty area. The visitors also saw Morgan Rogers head a promising chance wide midway through the first half, while substitute Danny Welbeck glanced a header wide shortly after replacing Pedro Neto in the 62nd minute.
With Colwill withdrawn at half-time, Chelsea reshuffled by introducing Estevao Willian and shifting Moises Caicedo into central defence, while Malo Gusto marked his 100th Premier League appearance as a second-half substitute. However, Sunderland remained disciplined, with Thomas Meunier executing a crucial tackle in the box and goalkeeper Robin Roefs remaining largely untroubled. Late substitute Wilson Isador missed an opportunity to add a second when denied by Penders, but Sunderland held on to secure a vital result in their climb away from the foot of the standings.
