Fenerbahce have finally returned to Europe's elite competition, securing their first UEFA Champions League appearance since the 2008/09 season with a dramatic 2-1 play-off second-leg triumph over Olympique Lyonnais. The victory caps off their first successful qualification campaign in ten attempts since that memorable campaign over a decade ago.
Having drawn 1-1 in Istanbul during the first leg, this encounter effectively served as a decider, and from the opening whistle it delivered on its promise of entertainment. Lyon came closest early on, with Malick Fofana producing a rasping effort that Ederson palmed wide, while Tanner Tessmann's header took a deflection off Milan Skriniar and went just past the post.
Fenerbahce, however, matched Lyon's menace going forward despite defensive fragility. Archie Brown saw a near-post attempt tipped away by Dominik Greif, and Oguz Aydin then struck the crossbar from the ensuing corner. The deadlock was finally broken just before the quarter-hour mark when Brown's delivery was met by towering striker Vedat Muriqi. Though Greif got a fingertip to the initial header, Muriqi was perfectly positioned to pounce on the rebound and slide it home.
The Yellow Canaries doubled their lead almost immediately thereafter. Mason Greenwood's corner found Archie Brown at the back post, and he nodded the ball into the net from close range to send the travelling supporters into raptures. Lyon threw men forward before the break but could only manage to force a post from Muriqi's wayward header and see Tyler Morton's drive tipped over by Ederson.
Expectations might have suggested a cautious second half from the Turkish side, but Fenerbahce had other ideas. Lois Openda went closest for Lyon, only to glance Fofana's cross wide, while Aydin sliced his counter-attacking effort over on the other end.
Lyon earned their moment of glory when Fofana, receiving a looping ball from Ainsley Maitland-Niles, guided a sublime volley into the far corner. The French side then poured forward in a wave of attacks and found the net twice, but VAR had other plans, disallowing both efforts for offside.
Despite looking fatigued in the dying stages, Lyon were gifted one last opportunity, but substitute Kail Boudache could not find the target when through on goal, allowing Fenerbahce to hold on and seal their passage.
Fans on the Anatolian shore of the Bosphorus will be celebrating a long-awaited return to Champions League football, with their eight league-phase opponents to be revealed the following day. For Lyon, disappointment gives way to hope that they can become the first French club to claim the UEFA Europa League title.
