Former England international Raheem Sterling has been formally charged with dangerous driving following a high-speed crash involving his Lamborghini on the M3 motorway back in May, Hampshire Police confirmed on Wednesday.
The 31-year-old, who hails from Berkshire, also faces accusations of possessing nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation and failing to provide a specimen. A spokesperson for the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary released a statement to Reuters detailing the trio of charges against the former Manchester City and Chelsea forward.
Sterling lost control of his Lamborghini and smashed into the motorway barriers during the incident. Fortunately, no other vehicles were involved in the crash, and no injuries were reported at the scene.
The footballer most recently took to the pitch for Dutch club Feyenoord, signing a short-term deal in February after parting ways with Chelsea by mutual consent. However, Sterling has been a free agent since the conclusion of last season, leaving his future on the pitch uncertain as he now contends with these serious legal matters.
