Chelsea have confirmed that club captain Reece James has had successful surgery on a knee injury. The 26-year-old defender, who is the longest serving player at the club, picked up the issue during training ahead of the team's 5-1 victory against Bournemouth last weekend. Following the setback, the decision was taken for him to undergo the operation.
James has now commenced rehabilitation alongside Chelsea's medical staff, though no time-frame has been given for his return to action. The captain's absence comes immediately ahead of a difficult run of fixtures, beginning with a Premier League trip to Everton. Chelsea are then set to host London rivals Tottenham and Manchester United, with a Carabao Cup visit to Liverpool sandwiched between those two home matches.
This latest physical problem follows multiple injuries that James has suffered across the past few seasons. Those issues previously caused the defender to miss several international tournaments with England since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. However, his injury record improved significantly last season, allowing him to take on a prominent role in an England World Cup run where the squad reached the semi-finals before winning the bronze medal match.
Prior to his surgery, James was among the players to withdraw from England duty during the most recent international break. Looking ahead, the next international break is set to begin at the start of November, when England are scheduled to face Croatia at Wembley Stadium, leaving Chelsea to navigate their upcoming tests without their skipper.
