Brighton forward Fran Kirby has revealed she was left feeling "stressed" and "disappointed" following the abrupt departure of head coach Dario Vidosic on the eve of the Women's Super League season. Vidosic, who led the Seagulls to their maiden FA Cup final and secured club-record fifth and seventh-place league finishes, suddenly left the post on 28 August—just nine days before the opening fixture against Arsenal. With 29-year-old Arturo Ruiz appointed the very same day, Kirby and her team-mates had to take on the Gunners without completing a single coaching session alongside their new manager.
The rushed transition contributed to a demanding start to 2026-27, as Brighton fell to Arsenal in their opener—the Gunners' only league victory so far—and went winless across Ruiz's first four WSL games after dropping points against Birmingham City and Aston Villa. Kirby, a seven-time league champion with Chelsea who has recorded 10 goals and six assists since signing in July 2024, acknowledged the challenge of adapting to a new tactical identity on such short notice. However, complemented by two League Cup victories, the division's youngest manager secured his first English top-flight win before the international break with a comprehensive 5-1 victory over promoted Charlton.
Ruiz arrived with strong pedigree after steering Real Sociedad to a third-place finish in Liga F and Champions League qualification, but his methods represent a shift from Vidosic's setup, which committed the most fouls and collected the most yellow cards across both 2024-25 and 2025-26. Kirby explained that the new boss wants the team to "harm the opposition quicker" rather than overplay in possession, while journalist Annabel Bassett observed Ruiz's tactical focus on pressing high and utilizing the flanks to open central space. Ruiz himself noted that despite the lack of preparation time, he hopes his players will continue to build greater clarity and consistency both with and without the ball.
Brighton face an immediate examination of that tactical progress this Sunday when they travel to face reigning champions Manchester City, who have won all five of their WSL matches this term and boast a club-record sequence of 15 straight home wins. The encounter marks the first meeting between the teams since City's 4-0 triumph in May's FA Cup final. Although Kirby acknowledged the depth of quality possessed by their upcoming hosts, the former England striker remains confident that Brighton have the attacking tools to trouble any opponent if they perform to their potential.
