Tottenham Hotspur brought an end to their winless start to the Premier League season, squeezing past Coventry City at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to capture their first league victory. The contest was highlighted by James Maddison, who marked his first start in 18 months with a brilliant strike against his former side. Having started his career with Coventry, where he was born, the playmaker chose to tone down his goal celebration during an impactful display before understandably tiring in the second half.
Tottenham's attack caused significant trouble for the visitors, with Omar Marmoush also scoring a superb goal after catching Milan van Ewijk with an elbow in the build-up. Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, who had no chance with the opening two goals, suffered a horror show for the third as substitute Ben Davies found the net to seal the win. Elsewhere in the Spurs lineup, Dominic Solanke endured a frustrating outing, receiving a booking and turning a first-half effort over the bar, while Sandro Tonali showed only occasional flashes as he continues to face scrutiny over his ยฃ100m price tag.
Coventry offered plenty of resistance and pulled a goal back through Jack Rudoni, who showed great determination to muscle his way through after Tottenham defender Jan Paul van Hecke surrendered possession. The visitors had earlier created threatening moments, with Brandon Thomas-Asante denied a first-half goal by a superb tackle from Micky van de Ven, and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto threatening alongside dangerous long throws from Van Ewijk. However, Coventry suffered an injury blow of their own when Sidiki Cherif hurt his shoulder in an awkward fall before being withdrawn.
While Tottenham secured the much-needed victory to close out their winless run, the triumph came with physical setbacks. Both Tosin Adarabioyo and Andrew Robertson picked up injuries that forced them off in the 69th minute. Nevertheless, the experienced Davies helped steady the defense to protect the advantage, leaving Coventry empty-handed on an evening where bookings for Jay Dasilva and Caleb Yirenkyi capped a testing match for the visitors.
