Tottenham Hotspur secured their first Premier League win of the campaign at the seventh time of asking with a 3-1 victory against Frank Lampard's newly-promoted Coventry City, but the result did not spare summer arrival Jan Paul van Hecke from fierce criticism. Roberto De Zerbi's side entered the Monday night home fixture carrying the unwanted status of being the only club across England's top five divisions without a league victory this season. While the three points ultimately hauled Spurs out of the bottom three, an expensive mistake from Van Hecke left former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O'Hara furious.
Spurs had originally seized the advantage in the 14th minute when Coventry youth product James Maddison marked his first Tottenham start in 18 months with a sublime curled strike. However, the hosts' dominance slipped four minutes into the second half when Van Hecke surrendered possession high up the pitch and failed to recover, enabling Jack Rudoni to score on the rebound after his initial attempt was blocked. Although Omar Marmoush restored the lead ten minutes later with a curling effort and Ben Davies settled the outcome in stoppage time, Van Hecke's costly error became the catalyst for an expletive-laden reaction from O'Hara.
While participating in a live watchalong on 'Sports Bar: The Lock In' alongside Jason Cundy, O'Hara unleashed an X-rated tirade against the £52 million defender. "What the f*** is Van Hecke doing? He is s***. He is absolute toilet," O'Hara raged. "It is toilet, it is so Spurs. What is Antonin Kinsky doing? Van Hecke, I'm sick of it, get him out of here. We sold Luka Vuskovic for that pile of c***." When co-host Cundy teased him by saying, "You're going down!", O'Hara countered with "F*** off," before later arguing on the Sports Bar that Van Hecke looks like "he's running through treacle" and claiming Brighton secured the better player by taking Vuskovic in exchange.
The scrutiny on the Dutch international comes after former England international Stuart Pearce also questioned his £52 million fee following a difficult battle with Nicolas Jackson during a 3-2 loss to Aston Villa in September. Despite the ongoing defensive debate surrounding De Zerbi's reunion with the centre-back, the victory brings vital breathing space to north London. The hard-fought result takes Tottenham up to 16th place in the Premier League table, moving them onto six points from their opening seven fixtures.
