Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been taken to hospital after collapsing while watching the club's second team train on Friday. The 40-year-old manager, who was appointed by the Bundesliga giants in May 2024, is set to undergo a thorough medical examination and will remain under observation following the incident during the amateur squad's session.
The health scare comes shortly after the former Manchester City and Belgium defender was struck down by illness earlier in the week. Kompany had been unwell with a virus, which forced him to miss Tuesday's pre-match news conference prior to Bayern's Champions League tie against Arsenal. Assistant coach Aaron Danks stepped in to handle media duties for that briefing, although Kompany was able to return to the touchline for the match on Wednesday.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl confirmed that the manager will be granted full backing and whatever time is necessary to recuperate. "Vincent Kompany's health is our top priority. We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure his speedy recovery," Eberl said. "Vinnie will receive all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs. His coaching team, in whom we have complete confidence, will take over his duties. Everyone at FC Bayern wishes Vinnie a speedy recovery."
With Kompany under medical care, the club stated that his coaching staff will oversee training and match operations for the time being. Bayern Munich must quickly refocus on competitive action, with their next fixture in the German top flight taking place against Freiburg on Sunday.
