Manchester City's flawless beginning to the Premier League season was halted at Villa Park as a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa put Enzo Maresca's defensive frailties under scrutiny. A double from Nicolas Jackson brought an end to City's streak of seven consecutive victories to open the campaign. The result leaves the Manchester club with just a single clean sheet across their previous six matches, having shipped nine goals in their past four fixtures after previously conceding eight in their opening nine games of the season.
Central to these backline issues are goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and defender Marc Guehi, with only eight Premier League players having committed more goal-leading errors (three each) since the start of last season. Signed to replace Ederson, Donnarumma struggled with his distribution and let Jackson's low strike squirm beneath him for Villa's second goal, prompting former City defender Steph Houghton to suggest on BBC Radio 5 Live that the keeper "could probably have done a little bit better." Meanwhile, Guehi was substituted at half-time after being dispossessed by John McGinn in the build-up to the opening goal and later receiving a yellow card for dragging down Jackson.
Despite the costly lapses, Maresca insisted he is "not worried about Marc at all," pointing to the England international playing every minute this season alongside the risk of remaining on a caution. The City manager did, however, state that both of Villa's goals were "absolutely" avoidable, remarking: "We played most of the game in their box but you have to be clinical and avoid mistakes like the two goals we conceded." Maresca tried multiple defensive setups during the contest, moving Abdukodir Khusanov inside for Guehi and introducing Rico Lewis out wide as he admitted a need to "find that balance."
Although City remain assured of a top-two position at the conclusion of the weekend, their defensive leaks require urgent correction. Echoing the famous Sir Alex Ferguson adage that "defence wins you titles," Maresca faces an immediate test to fix these vulnerabilities before a double-header against Fabian Hurzeler's free-scoring Brighton side in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday and the Premier League on Saturday.
