Aberdeen head coach Stephen Robinson believes Saturday's Premier Sports Cup semi-final against Rangers provides the perfect stage to ease the tension surrounding his side's difficult opening to the campaign. The Dons will travel to Hampden on a concerning stretch of form, having secured just a single victory across their past five outings. Their frustration mounted on Wednesday following a 1-0 home loss to Falkirk, which was met with angry boos from the Pittodrie crowd and left the team ninth in the Scottish Premiership, three points above the bottom.
Despite the recent setbacks, Robinson is taking confidence from his past semi-final exploits, having lifted this very trophy with St Mirren last year. Reflecting on past cup runs with both St Mirren and Motherwell, the manager pointed out that his teams were never expected to win those ties, leaving all the burden of expectation squarely on Rangers this weekend. Robinson stressed that there is no time for self-pity and emphasized that performing in front of a full Hampden crowd with strong backing represents an ideal platform for his players to turn things around.
Addressing the aftermath of the Falkirk defeat, Robinson insisted there are no dressing room factions and accepted his share of the flak, stating he refuses to deflect blame onto his squad. The manager, who took charge at Pittodrie in March, confirmed he has maintained normal discussions with chairman Dave Cormack and chief executive Adrian Bevingston. Robinson also acknowledged comments from Rangers boss Derek McInnes—who managed Aberdeen for close to eight years—urging patience for his counterpart, though Robinson recognized that results ultimately dictate how much time a manager receives.
Aberdeen striker Kevin Nisbet, who was appointed captain by Robinson during the summer, has called on the squad to shoulder the blame and deliver a response at the national stadium. Nisbet acknowledged that the supporters' furious reaction in midweek was entirely justified and stressed that the team must repay their manager after Robinson endured heavy criticism throughout the season, insisting the players now owe a complete performance to the gaffer, the fans, and the club.
