Lisandro Martinez has faced severe condemnation after receiving a quickfire red card during Manchester United's Premier League defeat against Chelsea. The Argentine centre-back was dismissed after collecting two yellow cards within just 83 seconds, prompting football writer Henry Winter to label the episode as "pathetic" and "almost mutinous." Martinez struggled to control his emotions following the red card and had to be pushed away by teammate Amad as he left the field.
The sequence that led to the defender's early exit began with a duel against Morgan Rogers, who turned Martinez before being hauled to the ground to trigger the initial booking. From the ensuing free-kick, Chelsea earned a corner where Martinez was assigned to mark Wesley Fofana. After losing his opponent, the defender chased Fofana toward the back post and delivered an elbow to his face without looking at the ball. Following an on-field review recommended by VAR, Chelsea were awarded a penalty, Martinez was shown his second yellow card, and Cole Palmer converted the spot-kick.
The defender's costly lapse provoked fierce reaction across the media. Discussing the incident with Shaun Custis on The Sunday Edition, Winter branded Martinez's actions "absolutely shocking" and noted that the player was appropriately blanked by Michael Carrick on his way down the tunnel. Meanwhile, Manchester United broadcaster Scott Saunders argued on the talkSPORT Goals Show that the defender should not be picked again. Saunders expressed frustration that Martinez gave the referee an unnecessary decision to make while United were already trailing 1-0, stating that his actions contradicted the leadership expected from him.
The setback added to a frustrating contest for Manchester United, who had previously squandered clear opportunities when Bruno Fernandes and Amad failed to convert sitters, while Matheus Cunha had a goal chalked off for offside. After entering the break level at 0-0, United fell behind when Rogers surged through the heart of the defence to score with a deft chip, preceding Martinez's rapid dismissal. With United currently embroiled in a relegation battle having secured only one league victory all season, Carrick merely shook his head when asked after the match if Martinez had let him down.
