Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has revealed he would personally support Trent Alexander-Arnold returning to Anfield in the future, though he remains uncertain whether the move would suit the current squad and supporters. Alexander-Arnold completed a controversial switch to Real Madrid in June 2025 after spending 19 years with his boyhood club, running down his contract to depart on a free transfer. That exit provoked anger among sections of the Liverpool fan base, leading to the defender being booed by the Anfield crowd once his departure plans were confirmed.
Alexander-Arnold enjoyed a hugely decorated career on Merseyside prior to his exit, collecting nine trophiesโincluding two Premier League titles and the Champions Leagueโwhile accumulating 354 first-team appearances. Addressing whether he would bring the England defender back to the club, Gerrard acknowledged the lingering sensitivity regarding the manner of his departure but conceded the full-back's class remains undeniable.
Speaking on Overlap Daily, Gerrard explained: "Ability wise, talent wise, yes. The decision he made and all the stuff around it, do I think it would be the right thing for Liverpool's group now and the supporters? I'm going to sit on the fence and say I'm unsure. Ability wise, talent wise, what he'd done for Liverpool in terms of the success, I would say yes, but the ending and that still being a little bit raw... I would, yes, myself personally. So I won't sit on the fence because that's poor from me. I would, yes. Do I think it's the right thing for this group now, this manager now and where Liverpool are at right now? I'm unsure." Gerrard reiterated that Alexander-Arnold "100 per cent" improves the team on talent alone, even if the timing might not align with the current dressing room.
The discussion comes during a difficult spell for the 28-year-old in Spain, where he has struggled for regular minutes under Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho. Alexander-Arnold has been an unused substitute six times across all competitions this season, and his 90-minute display against Racing Santander on Sunday was just the second instance this term that he has completed an entire match. Overall, he has made eight appearances, consisting of five starts and three substitute outings. Despite his limited action, Alexander-Arnold has ruled out a departure when the January transfer window opens, with his six-year contract at the Santiago Bernabeu running until the summer of 2031.
