Supporters of troubled National League club Gateshead are fearing for its very existence as off-field financial turmoil threatens the team's future. The Tyneside outfit sits bottom of the division with only four points from 15 matches, having suffered nine successive league defeats without a permanent manager. Problems escalated after director Mark Nellist resigned and withdrew his financial backing in September, leaving players and staff unpaid this month while a proposed takeover by American private investment firm Flacks Group has stalled.
The buyout by Flacks Group is on the brink of collapse following complications with Shoreline Limited, who previously attempted an acquisition in March before filing court documents to confirm their deal was null and void. With Shoreline not responding to requests to confirm they are no longer interested, Flacks Group stated they could not proceed. The club, which averages just 643 supporters at the rented Gateshead International Stadium, is also understood to owe more than £200,000 to HMRC. "It's such a mess," David Geddess of the Heed Army podcast told BBC Look North. "I seriously think it could be the end of the club. Financial issues are all over football but at the minute Gateshead play in a rented stadium and we have no assets. If anyone wants to take anything out of the club, it means winding up the club."
The current crisis follows a turbulent period on the pitch and in the dugout. After Rob Elliot guided Gateshead to safety last season—rebounding from 16 straight losses in all competitions to claim 31 points from 15 matches—he left for Carlisle United. Replacement Lee Cattermole was sacked on 4 October after only 12 National League games. Interim boss Ben Clark oversaw a 5-0 FA Cup replay defeat to eighth-tier Stafford Rangers before earning a first win in seven games against Stoke City Under-21s in the National League Cup. Vital revenue remains limited, with Gateshead having not played a home league match since 3 October after a rearranged game with Tamworth was postponed due to two other large events clashing at the stadium.
With Gateshead sitting 13 points adrift of safety, Mark Ferguson, the MP for Gateshead Central and Whickham, has raised the club's plight with the Independent Football Regulator. Ferguson warned: "Right now, the future of the club is up in the air and we shouldn't be blind to that. The clock is ticking and whatever action people can take, if they want to get a resolution, that work needed to start yesterday." Supporters share that concern, with Geddess emphasizing that structural stability outweighs results: "On the pitch doesn't really matter at the minute. We want infrastructure, we want to be in a place where this doesn't happen again the future or the near future because it's happened too many times."
