Japanese football official Kozo Tashima has stepped forward to contest the Fifa presidency against Gianni Infantino, vowing to rely on his "samurai spirit" in the upcoming March election in Morocco. The 68-year-old honorary president of the Japan Football Association and current Fifa Council member is viewed as the first serious challenger to Infantino, who has led the global governing body for a decade and recently claimed to hold the backing of the "vast, vast majority" of world football.
To formalise his candidacy, Tashima must first secure endorsements from at least five member associations, a hurdle he feels confident of clearing after receiving encouraging initial responses. Candidates are also required to demonstrate an active role in football for two of the prior five years. While former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ramon Vega has also announced his intention to standโclaiming eligibility as a club shareholder and stating he holds more than five endorsementsโVega previously fell short of the nomination threshold in three separate campaigns, leaving Tashima as the primary opposition.
The former player's decision to run stems from his dissatisfaction with several controversial moves under Infantino's stewardship. Tashima pointed directly to the abandoned initiative to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors, alongside the rescinded suspension of United States forward Folarin Balogun. The red-card decision, which was reviewed after US President Donald Trump called Infantino, drew sharp criticism from Tashima, who highlighted that Infantino has left key questions unanswered after allowing an ejected player to feature in the following match.
Relying on more than 20 years of administrative experience across the Japan Football Association, the Asian Football Confederation, and Fifa, Tashima has pledged to restore transparency through values of sincerity, soundness, fair play, and integrity. Despite acknowledging the financial limitations of his campaign and the considerable support Infantino commands, Tashima insists his mission is to rebuild good governance and safeguard the sport by placing a "football first" principle at the centre of the organisation.
