Former Wolverhampton Wanderers captain and England international Conor Coady has officially retired from professional football at the age of 33. The central defender, who earned 10 caps for his country, brings an end to his playing days after remaining without a club following his departure from Wrexham in September.
Coady initially came through the Liverpool academy as a highly regarded midfielder, where early performances drew comparisons to Steven Gerrard. After embarking on a loan spell at Sheffield United in 2013 and signing for Huddersfield Town at the end of that campaign, he was acquired by Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Kenny Jackett in 2015. Coady enjoyed the pinnacle of his career at Molineux after being repositioned as a central defender under then-boss Nuno Espirito Santo, playing an instrumental part in securing promotion back to the Premier League in 2018.
As Wolves skipper, Coady marshalled the side to two successive seventh-place finishes in the top flight and an appearance in the quarter-finals of the Europa League. Across his 503-match club career, he racked up 317 outings for Wolves and scored seven of his 22 combined goals for club and country. His long tenure at Molineux concluded with a loan switch to Everton in 2022, but after the Merseyside club decided against paying £4.5m to complete a permanent signing, he joined Leicester City for a reported £8.5m in July 2023. His final playing chapters included an ill-fated, prematurely ended stay at Wrexham and a loan spell at The Valley with Nathan Jones' Charlton last season.
Stepping away from the pitch, Coady has already established himself as a pundit for BBC Radio 5 Live and is now being tipped for a transition to the dugout. The former England international has been linked with a potential move into coaching as an assistant head coach for League One side Barnsley.
